Diesel Driver Experience

North Bay Railway can offer two unique driver experiences. You can drive Georgina our steam locomotive or one of our heritage diesel locomotives. The choice is yours.

Due to Covid-19 and the need to social distance we are unable to do Driver Experiences, we will resume these soon as possible. We are extending the expiry date of any Driver Experience voucher purchased before the 31 March 2020.

These run, as required, before or after (early morning or evening) our timetabled service February – November.

Cost is £120 and the course lasts around 1 hour.

All experiences come with a Gift Card, a North Bay Railway engine driver’s mug, pen, badge and certificate.

There will be photo opportunities during the experience, so feel free to bring your camera.

Diesel Driver Experience

This exciting driver experience gives you a chance to drive one of our 85 year old steam outline DIESEL locomotives on one round trip for you and up to 10 family members or friends enjoying the experience on the train. The main locomotives used for these experiences are Neptune or Triton. If you would like to drive Robin Hood or Poseidon please ask at time of booking.

Health and Safety Info

The above experiences are available to persons aged over 18 on the day of their experience and all participants must be physically fit. We regret that these experiences are not suitable for disabled persons. The carriage is 100% wheelchair friendly if needed for accompanying guests. (Up to two wheelchairs can fit onto the carriage.)
As you can perhaps appreciate, coal-fired steam locomotives are relatively dirty places on which to work and travel. The Guest Driver should therefore please wear stout footwear (steel capped shoes/boots – if at all possible) and some form of protective overall or old non nylon clothing.

Terms and Conditions

Driver Experiences are subject to the circumstances prevailing at the time and can be subject to change. The North Bay Railway reserves the right to make short notice alterations for technical or operational reasons.

Refunds – you have 28 days from date of purchase to request a refund otherwise Driver Experiences are non-refundable. All Driver Experience Vouchers have a 2 year expiry date from day of issue.

Please note Driver Experiences are not available between 1st January – 8th March 2019, 5th July – 5th September 2019, 8th October 2019 – 14th February 2020. We are unable to run Driver Experiences on Open Air Theatre show days. In the event a show is announced after your booking we will offer a full refund or an alternative date. Covid 19 update 24th June 2020 2020

North Bay Heritage Railway will be reopening on Saturday 4th July at 10:30am. We will be running a regular train service throughout the day.

Tickets will be available via our website from Monday 29th June 2020.

NBR will be Covid-19 compliant and we ask all visitors for follow the simple rules. Safety of passengers and staff will be put first!⠀

Just a reminder all 20/21 Season tickets are valid until 31st March 2022, any train or attraction vouchers will be extended until 31st October 2021 these include ones issued by Yorkshire Coast Radio, Great Yorkshire Radio and NBR. All Driver Experiences will be rearranged once the social distance restrictions are lifted (we are not putting an expiry date on these experiences) We are constantly reviewing these dates and will extend them if needs be.⠀
