Steam Driver Experience

North Bay Railway can offer two unique driver experiences. You can drive Georgina our steam locomotive or one of our heritage diesel locomotives. The choice is yours.

Due to Covid-19 and the need to social distance we are unable to do Driver Experiences, we will resume these soon as possible. We are extending the expiry date of any Driver Experience voucher purchased before the 31 March 2020.

Cost is £175 and the course lasts around 2 hours.

All experiences come with a Gift Card, a North Bay Railway engine driver’s mug, pen, badge and certificate.

There will be photo opportunities during the experience, so feel free to bring your camera.

Steam Driver Experience

Have you ever wanted to drive a real steam locomotive? This is your chance to drive our genuine coal-fired steam locomotive “Georgina” from Peasholm Station to Scalby Mills Station and back. Under supervision, you will feel what it is like to be in charge of a steam locomotive with all the demands of the timetable, and stunting requirements. Up to eight guests can travel with you on the train.

Health and Safety Info

The above experiences are available to persons aged over 18 on the day of their experience and all participants must be physically fit. We regret that these experiences are not suitable for disabled persons. The carriage is 100% wheelchair friendly if needed for accompanying guests. (Up to two wheelchairs can fit onto the carriage.)
As you can perhaps appreciate, coal-fired steam locomotives are relatively dirty places on which to work and travel. The Guest Driver should therefore please wear stout footwear (steel capped shoes/boots – if at all possible) and some form of protective overall or old non nylon clothing.

Terms and Conditions

Driver Experiences are subject to the circumstances prevailing at the time and can be subject to change. The North Bay Railway reserves the right to make short notice alterations for technical or operational reasons.

Refunds – you have 28 days from date of purchase to request a refund otherwise Driver Experiences are non-refundable. All Driver Experience Vouchers have a 2 year expiry date from day of issue.

Please note Driver Experiences are not available between 1st January – 8th March 2019, 5th July – 5th September 2019, 8th October 2019 – 14th February 2020. We are unable to run Driver Experiences on Open Air Theatre show days. In the event a show is announced after your booking we will offer a full refund or an alternative date. Covid-19 update March 2021

Scarborough North Bay Railway is now open everyday.
Saturday & Sunday 
First train leaves Peasholm Station 10:40am then every 20 minutes thereafter until the last train leaving Peasholm Station at 4:4Opm & Scalby Mills at 5:00pm
Monday - Friday
First train leaves Peasholm Station 10.40a.m. then every 40 minutes thereafter until the last train leaving Peasholm Station at 4.00p.m.

Please pay for you tickets by credit or debit card. Online ticket sales have been suspended for 2021 season.

To help protect everyone who visits NBR you will see all our staff wearing a mask. You will be asked to sanitise your hands on entry with the sanitiser we provide or your own. A mask is worn on entry and whilst queuing. You can remove the mask when you are on the train or at a table within the Lake area. You will need to fill in the Track and Trace form or scan the NHS Covid-19 QR code with your smart phone. We ask everyone to respect social distancing at 2 meters. We continue to clean each carriage compartment between use, door handles and other touch points on a regular basis.

NBR will be Covid-19 compliant and we ask all visitors to follow the simple rules. Safety of passengers and staff will be put first!
